Joan Baez by aurelia-acc Joan Baez by aurelia-acc
Portrait of Joan Baez done from an official picture probably taken in early 70's.

Just like Elvis Presley last year ( aurelia-acc.deviantart.com/art… ) , Joan Baez had been on my list of portraits to draw for a few years and she probably would have stayed there if I hadn't seen her on stage this year (at last!!!!). I had been wanting to see her on stage since the « Ring them bells » tour she made in 1995 so you can imagine how patient I have been. Not that she didn't come back to France since then but it was the first time I could actually attend a show. Anyway, I should have seen her in April but lucky me, the show was postponed! :( So in late September, the magical moment finally happened after all these years: I attended a concert of Joan Baez sitting in the first row  And I just had to draw her before the end of the year.

Now, about the artwork:
graphite (wooden pencils and powder) on watercolor hot pressed paper.
Size of the paper: 23x31 cm
Size of the artwork: 20x27 cm
time to draw: about 45 hours
ref: img.photobucket.com/albums/v66…

All the steps of the work in progress can be seen in full size at my website here: www.aurelia-art.com/index.php/…

This critique has been left on behalf of #Graphite-Gods I'm sorry it's taken me such a long time to do this.

On viewing the ref pic, I notice immediately how you have chosen to up the contrast and bring out the highlights more. The photo was rather grey and I believe you have done a most credible job in making the drawn portrait more dynamic than the photo. I think this choice works well throughout most of your drawing, apart from in the area of the hand - something there is bugging me, it may be how white the fingernails are appearing and some selective light tone added to here might help pick out the contours of the nails. I love the variety of tone in the rest of the portrait.
I've commented before on the way you like to tackle hair - how the detail you put it on each strand can give hair a stiff textured appearance. I like how there are areas in the hair which appear more naturalistic and seem less fussy. You've captured the play of light on the hair well also.
The eyes look stunning and her gaze has such emotion. My personal taste would be for there to be tone in the whites of the eye (but maybe this was lost when you scanned the image).
You've made Joan's lips much fuller than they are in the photo, but they look most credible. I believe this is a very successful portrait and you have done a tremendous job in this.

Great attention to detail, good shading. The eyes and the lips are very well done, the hair looks crisp and sharp. Not much to criticize. Detailed, great drawing :)

Professionally - and beautifully - done! I really love how the skin and hair actually look like they have the texture they should; it's sometimes very hard to get that right, but you've done it. Very nice job! :)

Did you try to give it to her? I think she would have been honored!

No, I made the drawing a couple of months after the concert. But if I knew where to send it to, I'd try to ask for an autograph on a copy of the portrait and offer one to her at the same time.

wonderful work. And it's amazing that I can see the 'look' in her eyes. She looks alive.
